things are terrible, yeah? let’s talk about something trivial.
remember the golden days of beauty youtube? before Dramageddon? when you could hardly scroll through three videos without seeing a beautiful girl with pin-straight hair and intense eyebrows pulling a Vera Bradley wristlet and a Kylie Lip Kit out of a Louis Vuitton Neverfull?
as a deeply nosy individual, i miss those days dearly. for many reasons. so in my own feeble attempt to resurrect that era in my little corner of the internet, i dumped out and photographed the contents of my everyday bag to share with all of you.
i did not clean out my bag before documenting its contents, so this is a true and honest look at what i carry with me on a regular basis. enjoy.
THE BAG ITSELF
my go-to bag that i carry with me pretty much everywhere is the Rebecca Minkoff M.A.B. Hobo. i did a lot of research before buying this bag, because i wanted something big enough to carry everything i need without being TOO big, and i wanted silver hardware, which is weirdly difficult to find these days.
editor’s note: the silver hardware is no longer available…boo. black hardware shown here.
i’ve had this bag for two years and have had to replace the shoulder strap once, but for how much i’ve worn it, i think that’s a fair trade — especially considering that the rest of the bag is showing almost no signs of wear. 10/10 recommend.
THE ACTUAL CONTENTS
whoa, i carry a lot of stuff. and this isn’t even the fullest i’ve ever seen this bag.
so, working left to right and top to bottom…
first, a birdie personal safety alarm. i’ve never had to use this, but i clip it to every bag i carry just in case. you never know.
a rechargeable portable fan, because even in winter i get sweatier than a salmon in a bear hug.
a muji pencil case…
from left to right: a mini bic wite-out, five muji double-ended highlighters, a double-ended sharpie, a green gelly roll pen, four le pen technical drawing pens (two in 0.3mm and two in 0.5mm), two bic cristal Up black ballpoint pens, and three big 0.7mm pencils.
…and three loose pens in case of emergency.
my journal, which i carry everywhere. this is a moleskine classic expanded, and i hate it. the paper is too thin and everything bleeds through. but it’s really long, so it’ll be another few months before it’s finished :/
my french textbook and notebook (i’m learning french).
two undated muji monthly planners, relatively new additions to my everyday carry — let me know if you want a more detailed post about how i use these.
apple wired headphones, because they’re chicer than wireless.
two portable phone chargers so i’m never left without power.
a disposable camera with 12 photos left and a completely dead flash.
a 2-ride metrocard with an indeterminate amount of rides left.
two pairs of sunglasses — ray-bans for everyday, and these cool silver snake ones for when i’m feeling edgy. the ray-bans live in the case and the silver ones float about the bag unprotected because i like to live on the edge.
several varieties of gum.
a hair tie.
a broken carabiner (the ultimate lesbian tragedy).
an almost-empty hand sanitizer, because new york is gross.
Glossier Balm Dotcom in Fig (purchased after Glossier returned to the original Balm Dotcom formula), Malin + Goetz hand lotion i stole from a hotel, and a Glossier Ultralip in Cachet in case i need to take my look from day to night (which never happens).
leftover Halloween candy, plus a Gin-Gin for my motion sickness — when i call an uber and am assigned to a Tesla, i die a little inside.
my wallet (more info here!) and three loose dollars.
a teeny Glossier pouch full of crystals, because i’m a stereotype.
a travel-sized Glossier After Baume container that actually contains one dose of my daily medications in case i leave the house in a hurry.
the receipt from when i got licensed to officiate my friends’ wedding.
two tampons.
a quarter of a straw wrapper?
and a band-aid, because i walk a lot, which means blisters.
the only thing that is always in my bag that didn’t make it to this photo is this little rubber ball thing that rolls around the bottom of my bag and collects debris. when i pulled everything out of the bag, i noticed the ball was truly covered in dust and needed a good wash, so it unfortunately missed picture day.
all things considered, this is pretty tame. i expected a lot more trash and weird stuff when i decided to make this post…but i guess i’m more refined than i thought. quelle surprise.
anyway, i hope you enjoyed these three minutes of distraction from the world at large. if you think there’s anything missing from this bag, let me know — i have an innate need to be prepared for anything.
